Advanced Services Building Enterprise Data Center Architectures (EDCA)

Who Should Attend

  • Individuals tasked with supporting the design, deployment, operation, or maintenance of a enterprise data center architecture environment
  • Individuals seeking hands-on experience integrating Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, Cisco MDS 9000, and Cisco ONS 15454 devices
  • Individuals supporting medium-sized or large enterprise data centers
  • Individuals functioning in certain job roles, including network architect, network designer, or implementation personnel

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge in IP routing protocols and switching features, including Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS), Spanning Tree Protocol, Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), and PVST+.
  • Knowledge of server and mainframe operations, including TCP processing, IBM Fiber Connection (FICON), and Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON).
  • Knowledge of SAN principles and protocols, including Fibre Channel and iSCSI.
  • Knowledge of optical transport operations and protocols, including fiber optics, SONET, and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM).
  • Familiarity with Cisco GUI-based network management applications such as CiscoWorks, Cisco Fabric Manager, and Cisco MDS 9000 Device Manager.
  • Ability to efficiently use a command-line interface (CLI) to perform Cisco IOS Software configurations.

Course Objectives

After completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot Layer 2 features across Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series and 6500 Series switches to provide dynamic and robust connectivity to server farms.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot Layer 2 and Layer 3 security features to provide a minimal level of defense against network attacks.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot SAN features, including VSANs, zoning, FCIP, and iSCSI in practical operation scenarios using Cisco MDS 9000 devices.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot a SONET BLSR using the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) to provide business continuance in a distributed data center environment.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot the integration of Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, Cisco MDS 9000, and Cisco ONS 15454 devices to build a distributed data center lab topology.

Course Content

During this course, students will integrate Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, Cisco MDS 9000 Family, and Cisco ONS 15454 devices in a distributed data center environment. Using Cisco IOS Software, Cisco Fabric Manager, Cisco Device Manager, and Cisco Transport Controller GUIs, students will build an end-to-end network using switching, storage area network (SAN), and optical (SONET) technologies.

Hands-on lab exercises provide opportunities to provision many features, including Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol Plus (Rapid PVST+), Hot Standby Redundancy Protocol (HSRP), Layer 2 and Layer 3 security, virtual SANs (VSANs), zoning, Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP), bidirectional line switch ring (BLSR), and FCIP over SONET.

The course outline is as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Enterprise Data Center Architecture Overview
  • Enterprise Data Center Architecture Components
  • Deploying Layer 2 Features to the Server Farm
  • Deploying Layer 3 Resiliency within the Data Center
  • Integrating Firewall and Content Switching Services Modules
  • Deploying iSCSI across Cisco MDS 9000 Devices
  • Deploying FCIP across Cisco MDS 9000 Devices
  • Configuring SONET Rings for Data Center Interconnectivity
  • Providing Business Continuance with FCIP over SONET
