The iPhone and Cisco Wireless Infrastructures
Apple`s iPhone catapulted the firm to near the top of the Smartphone charts thanks to its intelligent and attractive design, user friendly interface and wealth of connectivity options, making it more than just a fashion fad. The iPhone`s first iteration wasn`t quite as successful as its second because of the lack of 3G connectivity which severely limited the data throughput that it was capable of, but in summer 2008 this problem was rectified with the iPhone 3G. On top of high speed mobile broadband, the iPhone also has Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing it to connect to a wireless network, as well as Bluetooth for additional networking capabilities. The iPhone is well equipped to deal with the requirements of a busy business lifestyle thanks to the connectivity it affords, and with Cisco Wireless Networks appearing on a wide scale to unify your enterprises networking requirements you may be wondering how the iPhone will operate in such and environment.
Cisco have been outlining a raft of updates and improvements to their wireless networking hardware and software capabilities to take into account the ubiquity of mobile technology with Wi-Fi connectivity and the convenience that this affords business people worldwide. The two main areas in which the iPhone has been integrated into the Cisco wireless environment are in data services and in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calling and conferencing, so let`s look at each in turn.
Apple and Cisco first announced the chance of a collaboration in January 2009, and in May the first signs of progress came through. In terms of data services the big news is the wireless n range extension and variously improved access points to enable users to access data faster and on a wider scale, as well as adding improved customisation and power for the mobile user. In this brave new wireless environment it`s all about engaging the business community and allowing for personalisation, which is why the iPhone`s App store and the Cisco Wireless Network infrastructures are being touted as symbiotically linked and integral to mutual success in the business market.
With improved connectivity and data service of course comes the opportunity to make vocal and visual communication in a wireless environment a possibility. With VoIP services prevalent in business environment because of their low cost, exploiting the iPhone`s Wi-Fi connectivity for video and voice conferencing has been exploited to the fullest. The WebEx Meeting Centre software will be released as an application in the iPhone`s App Store, making it available for download to every iPhone owner and of course allowing the iPhone to further take advantage of Cisco Wireless Infrastructures in the workplace. The Apple iPhone is becoming more powerful every day as third parties collaborate to fully realise the potential of its connectivity for both data and communications purposes. Expect the coming months and the imminent release of the newest iPhone, the 3G S, to herald even more improvements and innovation.
